Beware of Ticks!

Soon Maryland’s weather will turn warm and the annual nymph tick invasion will begin again. Even scarier, with climate change, adult ticks are no longer just a warm weather scourge. Ticks common to our state are the American dog tick (wood tick), Blacklegged tick (deer tick), Brown dog tick, Lone star tick, Gulf coast tick, Asian longhorned tick (non-native, first discovered in NY in 2010).

This article from the University of Maryland Extension, discusses each tick’s characteristic, how we can protect ourselves from ticks, tick prevention around home and yard, and more.

  • Warming Climate Triggers Changes in Forests: “A warming climate is causing earlier springs and later autumns in eastern forests of the United States, lengthening the growing season for trees and potentially changing how forests function. Scientists from the Appalachian Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science used a combination of satellite images and field measurements to show that trees have greater demand for soil nitrogen in years with early springs.”
